See Egham apartmentsEgham is a small Surrey town shaped by one big university. Royal Holloway sits on Egham Hill, between the town centre below and the village of Englefield Green beyond. Every private property we list here includes bills, and trains from Egham station run to London Waterloo and Reading.
Royal Holloway accommodation drives most Egham searches, and nearly everything here revolves around one campus. Its main gates face Egham Hill, so we start with the campus itself, the road outside and how quickly each side of town reaches lectures.
On Egham Hill in Surrey, postcode TW20 0EX, just outside the M25. The university says the town is about ten minutes on foot, and its orange Founder's Building is the landmark. Our Royal Holloway page lists private properties within reach.
Teaching buildings, the library and the Students' Union share one leafy site, so most weekdays you rarely leave it. A room close by feels like part of campus. The town below supplies supermarkets, cafes and a calmer evening when you want one.
Royal Holloway gives free parking permits only to students living more than 1.5 miles away, and its car parks still fill up. Most renters nearby will not qualify. The university counts around 600 cycle spaces on campus, many of them covered.
iQ The Podium sits on Egham Hill across from campus, and its page quotes a one minute walk to Royal Holloway. It mixes en-suites, studios and shared apartments, with a free gym, games room and study areas for residents.
Yes. The main stop is outside the entrance. White Bus routes 441 and 441A link campus with Staines, and First Bus route 8 runs between Slough and Heathrow Terminal 5. Check timetables in holidays, as services can change then.
Egham Hill rises from the town centre roundabout to the campus gates. Royal Holloway puts the walk from Egham station at about 20 minutes. Students living in town make that climb daily, so budget for a bike or the shuttle in winter.
Englefield Green is the village on the far side of Royal Holloway, and plenty of second years base themselves there. It has pubs, a green and a few shops, with Windsor Great Park close by and Egham station further downhill.
Englefield Green sits beside Royal Holloway, up the hill from Egham. A forum poster who lived there describes a nice village feel around its green. Expect pubs, cafes and takeaways, with bigger food shops down in Egham or Staines.
Yes. Hox Park sits on Hox Park Drive in Englefield Green, postcode TW20 0GP. It offers en-suites in small clusters, four bed apartments and several studio sizes, plus a gym and bike storage. Walk the route to campus before you sign.
Very little. Royal Holloway says White Bus runs a special low fare between campus, Egham and Englefield Green. Surrey residents aged 20 or under can also apply for a Surrey LINK card, which halves single and return fares around the county.
Windsor Great Park borders Englefield Green, and Royal Holloway suggests it for picnics and fresh air. Virginia Water lake sits within the same parkland. Runners, cyclists and walkers get miles of green space without needing a train or a car.
The Garage on Harvest Road in Englefield Green is one example of a newer private block. Its page quotes a six minute walk to campus. Residents get a gym, a pool table and private study rooms, with en-suites and studios on offer.
Cycling is simplest. Royal Holloway lists cycle paths joining Englefield Green and Egham with Windsor, Staines and Virginia Water. Windsor has shops, restaurants, a theatre and a cinema, so it works well for an evening away from campus.
Egham town sits at the foot of the hill, with the station, the High Street and a new square. Rooms here swap a longer climb to lectures for quick trains to London and Reading, plus supermarkets and cafes nearby.
Yes, in about 20 minutes, according to Royal Holloway. You follow Church Road onto the High Street, then climb Egham Hill. A subsidised RHU shuttle bus from the station takes under ten minutes when your legs or the weather say no.
Magna Square is a new quarter where Station Road North meets the High Street. Runnymede Council says its first building houses up to 100 Royal Holloway students, and plans include a town square, a supermarket and a cinema. Its studios include bills.
Egham sits on the Reading to London Waterloo line, run by South Western Railway. It lies outside the Oyster zones, though contactless works between Waterloo and Virginia Water. Students who head home through London often pick rooms near the station.
Parts of it are. A local on a Surrey forum says central Egham and the Englefield Green side are generally fine, while the Pooley Green edge towards Staines has flooded more than once. Ask any landlord about flood history before signing.
Straits Garden sits on Egham High Street, so cafes and shops are right outside. Its page quotes about 15 minutes on foot to Royal Holloway. It focuses on studios, with a cinema room, gym and common room shared by residents.
For choice, often yes. Staines is a larger town a short bus ride east, with more shops, restaurants and a cinema. White Bus routes 441 and 500 run there. Egham itself stays quiet, which suits students who like to study late.
Studio searches feature heavily for Egham, and the town has only a handful of private properties. This tab sets out weekly rents, what bills cover, studio size choices and why Italia Conti applicants should check the map first.
Around £250 a week and upward. Private properties on our Egham pages start between about £250 and £280 a week, with bills included, and bigger studios cost more. With so few buildings in town, good rooms go early.
All six private properties on our Egham pages fold power, water and broadband into the rent. Full time students pay no council tax either. Private house shares in Englefield Green usually list rent alone, so ask for typical monthly costs.
iQ The Pad on Egham Hill offers en-suites that share a kitchen and lounge, plus studios in several sizes. Its page quotes a five minute walk to Royal Holloway. Sharing usually costs less than a studio, and you meet people faster.
Sometimes. Larger Egham studios add floor space, a bigger kitchen and a dining corner, but they rarely change your commute. Pay for size only if you cook a lot or study at home, since most campus life happens up on Egham Hill.
Rarely. London rents usually run higher than Egham's, and daily trains from Waterloo add a large travel bill on top. A Reddit poster weighing up universities says housing around Englefield Green and Egham is more affordable than central London.
In central Woking, not Egham. Italia Conti lists its campus at Henry Plaza on Victoria Way, about seven minutes on foot from Woking station. Check the train route before choosing an Egham room. Our Italia Conti page lists nearby options.
