Living in Elephant & Castle as a Student

Elephant and Castle is one of South London's most fast-changing neighbourhoods, and it wears that transformation openly. Alongside the new glass-fronted developments around Elephant Park, you'll still find the area's older character: the legendary undercroft skate park beneath the railway arches, independent Latin American cafés tucked along the backstreets, and the sprawling stalls of East Street Market on weekends.

For students, Elephant and Castle student accommodation works particularly well because London South Bank University's main campus sits right in the middle of it, with UAL's London College of Communication also based here. That means for a huge number of students, "commute" simply means walking out the front door.

The area suits students who want to be genuinely in the middle of things, rather than nearby. You're a short walk from Burgess Park's open green space, a couple of Tube stops from London Bridge and Waterloo, and surrounded by a food scene that punches well above its weight for a South London postcode.

Transport Links

+
Elephant & Castle station is one of South London's busiest transport hubs, served by both the Northern line and the Bakerloo line, alongside National Rail services running to London Bridge, Blackfriars, and beyond via Thameslink. This gives students fast, direct access into the City, the West End, and King's Cross without needing to change lines more than once.

Being in Zone 1 also means you're within easy walking distance of Waterloo, Southwark, and Borough, putting London Bridge, the South Bank, and the Strand campuses of King's College London firmly within reach on foot.

Cost of Living

+
Because it sits in Zone 1, Elephant and Castle is generally pricier than outer London areas, but it's often more affordable than neighbouring Zone 1 postcodes like Waterloo or Borough, especially now that the area has expanded with newer purpose-built student developments. Student accommodation Elephant and Castle options closer to the new Elephant Park development tend to come at a premium, given the modern facilities and direct access to shops and transport.

Head slightly further towards Walworth or Newington, and you'll typically find better value without losing much in terms of commute time. Use our cost of living calculator to compare your options and see how far your budget stretches.

Food and Drink

+
Elephant & Castle has quietly become one of South London's most exciting places to eat, and its food scene tells the story of the area's identity. Mercato Metropolitano, a huge converted warehouse just off the main roundabout, is the centrepiece: a buzzing indoor food market packed with independent Italian vendors, a wood-fired pizza oven, a working cinema, and even its own urban farm.

Just as important is the area's long-standing Latin American community, which has shaped Elephant & Castle's food culture for decades. Empanadas, arepas, and Colombian coffee are easy to find in the small cafés and eateries dotted around the arches and side streets, offering some of the most authentic Latin American food anywhere in London, at prices that won't dent a student loan.

For evenings out, Artworks Elephant, a development built from converted shipping containers, brings together bars, street food, and live events in a relaxed, sociable setting. And for a proper night out, Ministry of Sound is within a few minutes' walk, making Elephant & Castle a genuine destination for nightlife as well as food.

Frequently Asked Questions

Deciding where to live in a new city involves weighing up rent, contracts, transport, and what's actually nearby. These FAQs cover the essentials so you can make a confident choice that fits your budget, commute, and everyday routine.

Is Elephant & Castle a good place to live for students?

Definitely. Elephant and Castle stands out for students who want to be within walking distance of their studies while staying plugged into the rest of the city. London South Bank University's campus is based right here, and UAL's London College of Communication is just around the corner, so a large chunk of student life plays out locally rather than at the end of a commute.

If you're weighing up student accommodation in Elephant and Castle, what tends to sell it is the combination of speed (everything's close by), connectivity (you're never more than a couple of stops from anywhere), and an evolving food and nightlife scene that keeps things interesting.

What types of student accommodation are available in Elephant & Castle?

You'll generally find en-suite rooms, studio apartments, shared flats, and individual rooms across various purpose-built student developments. An en-suite gives you your own bathroom while keeping the shared kitchen and social side of student living, whereas a studio hands you full privacy and your own space to retreat to.

How much does student accommodation in Elephant & Castle cost?

Pricing shifts depending on the specific building, room type, and how central you are to the roundabout and the newer Elephant Park development. Being right in the thick of it usually comes at a higher cost, while heading slightly out towards Walworth or Newington can bring the price down.

It pays to look past the headline weekly rent figure and check what's actually bundled in - things like bills, Wi-Fi, insurance, and access to communal spaces can make a real difference to your overall costs.

What is included in the rent for private student accommodation in Elephant & Castle?

A lot of privately run buildings roll utility bills into the rent, which takes the guesswork out of monthly budgeting. That usually stretches to cover electricity, water, heating, and Wi-Fi, though exactly what's bundled in differs from property to property.

You'll also often get access to shared extras; think study rooms, communal lounges, laundry facilities, gyms, and secure building entry. Worth double-checking the fine print before signing, particularly around deposits, cancellation policies, and what happens if you want to stay on over summer.

How long are Elephant & Castle student accommodation contracts?

This really comes down to the individual provider - some buildings offer flexible, shorter lets, while others lock you into the full academic year or extended 51-week agreements.

Before committing, it's worth checking the contract length matches your actual needs, especially if you're only around for a single term, a placement year, or a postgraduate course. Ask too about whether you can extend your stay if summer plans keep you in London.

Is Elephant & Castle expensive for students?

Sitting in Zone 1 means Elephant & Castle isn't going to be the cheapest postcode on the map, though it typically undercuts nearby areas such as Waterloo or Borough. Where you land within the area makes a noticeable difference - accommodation close to the newer Elephant Park development generally costs more than options a short stroll away in Walworth or Newington.

Since rent is usually the biggest line item in any student budget, it's worth taking the time to properly compare room types, included facilities, and what's covered in the price before signing anything.

Is Elephant & Castle a safe area for students?

It's a lively, densely populated corner of South London, with plenty of foot traffic from residents, students, and shoppers throughout the day and into the evening thanks to the market, food venues, and shops nearby. As is sensible anywhere in a big city, it helps to stay alert to your surroundings, particularly late at night around the main roundabout and transport hub.

Opting for accommodation with secure entry systems and on-site support can go a long way toward making daily life feel more comfortable and secure.
