See Southampton non-ensuite roomsSouthampton has two universities: the University of Southampton, based at Highfield in the north, and Solent University in the city centre. Most properties on our Southampton pages sit in or near the centre, and nearly all include bills in the weekly rent.
Southampton uni accommodation is the city's biggest search, level with student accommodation itself. The University of Southampton spreads across several campuses, so check which one teaches your course first. Here are the main sites and the rooms near them.
Highfield, in the north of the city. The University of Southampton calls it its largest and oldest campus, with the main library and Students' Union. Our University of Southampton page lists private properties near it and its other sites.
Avenue sits between the city centre and Highfield and hosts most humanities subjects. St Margaret's House on Hulse Road is one property nearby; its page quotes a 13 minute walk to Avenue and a short bus ride to Highfield.
Not every course sits at Highfield. Medicine teaches at University Hospital Southampton, ocean and earth science at the Waterfront campus by the National Oceanography Centre, and art at Winchester School of Art in Winchester. Check your site before you book.
Mostly at Boldrewood, close to Highfield, which also hosts the Business School. Green Wood Court on Bassett Green Road says both sites are a few minutes away on foot, with a Unilink stop outside. Rooms share kitchens in larger flats.
Unilink buses connect the university's campuses with the city centre, the rail stations and the General Hospital. A guide on a university student blog notes the U2 serves Avenue and Boldrewood, while the U6C ends at Southampton Central.
The free Unilink pass has been for residents of university accommodation, not private renters. If you live off campus, price a bus pass into your budget, or pick a room within walking distance of your main campus. Portswood keeps most walks short.
Portswood and Highfield searches sit close behind the city's main terms, and Portswood Road is where many second years end up. Here is Portswood, St Denys, Swaythling, Bassett and what the university advises before you sign for a house.
Portswood Road runs north towards Highfield, lined with shops, bars and takeaways, so campus and daily life sit within one walk. Vita Student Portswood House, beside the River Itchen, says the university is under ten minutes away on foot.
Several studio buildings stand on Portswood Road itself. Stanley Studios describes itself as a stone's throw from campus, with studios of around 18 to 27 square metres. Studios suit students who want their own kitchen near Highfield.
Bassett, north of Highfield, is greener and quieter than Portswood, with more family homes. It suits students who want calm evenings and a short walk to Boldrewood, but nightlife means a bus or a long walk.
About 20 minutes on foot from Highfield, the university says, with their own stations on the line into Southampton Central. Both hold terraced houses that private landlords let to groups, handy if you travel home by train.
The university's own student guide on moving out urges you to check for mould and damp, read the contract slowly and not rush into signing. The Students' Union advice centre can review a tenancy. Use it before paying any holding fee.
The Court Yard is one more Portswood option, with studios close to the shops and a short walk from Highfield. Rooms right on the main road can be noisier at night, so request a quieter side of the building if noise bothers you.
Solent University teaches in the city centre, and most properties on our Southampton pages sit within a mile or so of it. Here is East Park Terrace, St Mary's, the Old Town, Ocean Village and a converted bank site.
At East Park Terrace, in the heart of the city centre, about 10 to 15 minutes on foot from Southampton Central station. Our Southampton Solent University page lists private properties nearby, and many sit within a walk.
Crescent Place on St Mary's Road says it sits over the road from Solent University. It mixes en-suites, shared houses for six or eight students and larger studios, all with bills included, so groups and solo renters both fit.
Historic. Long stretches of Southampton's medieval walls survive around the Old Town, near the High Street and Bernard Street, and several student properties sit there. It is a short walk to Solent and the WestQuay shops.
Southampton has a few student buildings with history, including one on West Street built on the site of two former banks. Old Town studios like these sit a short walk from Solent, each with its own kitchen and shower room.
Near Ocean Village and the marina, close to the National Oceanography Centre. Lucia Foster Welch on Royal Crescent Road is one property here, with smaller rooms that share bathrooms, which keeps rent low. It is also near Solent.
Nearly every Southampton property we list includes bills, but a couple of central studio buildings have not. Ask each provider if energy, water and Wi-Fi sit in the weekly price before you work out a budget.
Southampton rent covers a wide range, from shared bathroom rooms to marina view studios. Here is the typical spread, the university's own living cost guide, marina studios, townhouse flats for groups and apartments for two.
Most starting prices on our Southampton pages sit around £210 to £230 a week. Rooms with a shared bathroom start below £100, while the dearest marina studios pass £300. Your room type decides most of the gap.
The University of Southampton publishes weekly cost estimates for private renters, splitting rent, utilities, food and social life. Use its current figures as a guide, then add travel and course costs that fit how you live.
Vita Student Richmond House has offered studios of around 15 to 26 square metres overlooking the marina, with free weekday breakfast and housekeeping every two weeks. These sit among the dearest rooms on our Southampton pages.
Some city centre properties let whole townhouses inside one building. Canvas Capital House on Houndwell Place has offered townhouse rooms of around 10 square metres, sharing a kitchen with a large group. It suits friends who want house life with bills included.
Yes. Vincent Place has offered two bed apartments, each with its own kitchen and bathroom shared by the pair. You get more privacy than a cluster flat while splitting one living space with someone you chose.
University of Southampton rooms run from shared bathroom options at Wessex Lane in Swaythling up to part catered rooms. Private properties offer more studios and central locations. Price each over its full contract, not per week.
