This was part of the “Grands Travaux”, a major architectural project of the French President at that time, François Mitterrand. This project transformed Paris. And in 1989, the Grande Arche was inaugurated. The idea was to create a modern line connecting La Défense with the historic centre of Paris, towards the Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre.

Visited La Grande Arche de la Défense and it was really impressive to see in person. The architecture is striking — a huge modern monument that perfectly frames the sky and stands out among the skyscrapers of La Défense. It feels very different from the historic landmarks in central Paris but just as memorable. Walking around the large open plaza gives you a great sense of the scale of the structure. The design is clean, geometric, and incredibly photogenic from almost every angle. It’s especially impressive standing directly beneath it and looking up through the enormous square arch. The surrounding area is lively with shops, offices, and plenty of places to explore, making it a great stop if you’re visiting the La Défense district. Definitely worth seeing if you enjoy modern architecture and want a different perspective of Paris.

La Défense is an incredible contrast to the historic center of Paris! Standing at the base of the Grande Arche, you really feel the massive scale of this modern 'open cube' design. I loved walking along the Esplanade to see the contemporary sculptures, like César's Thumb, and the futuristic skyscrapers. It's also a great spot for shopping at Westfield Les 4 Temps. Seeing the direct line all the way back to the Arc de Triomphe from here is a must for any architecture fan. A stunning, modern face of Paris! 🇫🇷🏙️✨

The Grande Arche de la Défense is a massive, beautiful, and modern monument, offering a more contemporary feel compared to the Arc de Triomphe. Located in the impressive La Défense district, it’s a great place for sightseeing and photography, with striking architecture and open urban views. There are also two excellent shopping centers nearby, making the area even more enjoyable to explore.

After many trips to Paris I finally got out to the grand arch. Wonderful piece or architecture that was planned out to be in line with rhe arc de triomophe! Shopping mall right there making the plaza a cool place to hang out under the arch or take care of your shopping business. Right off the RER A.
