About Canterbury

Canterbury, a cathedral city in southeast England, was a popular pilgrimage destination in the Middle Ages. Cobblestone streets and timber-framed dwellings encircle the medieval center, surrounded by ancient Roman walls. Canterbury Cathedral, built-in 597 A.D. and incorporates Gothic and Romanesque elements in its stone carvings and stained-glass windows, is the seat of the Church of England and the Anglican Communion.

The city is home to around 31,000 students (the U.K.'s highest student-to-permanent resident ratio). Three universities, as well as various other higher education institutes and colleges, are located there. According to the 2001 census, full-time students accounted for 22% of the population aged 16–74, compared to 7% in England.

Since Paleolithic times, the city has served as the capital of the Celtic Cantiaci and the Jute Kingdom of Kent. The area is littered with historical structures, including a Roman-era city wall.
